Timor em Portugal – heterotopia de um sexto império

Abstract

Este trabalho tem por objectivo analisar como o movimento de solidariedade por Timor, ocorrido em Portugal, em 1999, constituiu um momento de reflexividade nacional. Para tal, é tida em consideração a relação histórica e cultural de Portugal com a ex-colónia e a mediatização dos acontecimentos, em Timor e Portugal, depois do referendo pela auto-determinação de Timor-Leste. Considerando as acções e sentidos produzidos no contexto do movimento de apoio ao povo timorense, podemos dizer que estamos perante uma reconfiguração identitária dos portugueses, centrada nos valores da democracia e dos direitos humanos.

This paper aims to analyze how the solidarity movement for East Timor, held in Portugal in 1999, was a moment of national reflexivity. According to this purpose, historical and cultural relations between Portugal and its former colony are taken into consideration, as well as the media coverage of the events in East Timor and Portugal after the referendum for self-determination of the East Timorese. Considering the actions and meanings produced within the movement in support of the Timorese people, we can say that this is a reconfiguration of the Portuguese identity, driven to the values of democracy and human rights.
